Beat your Kyphosis
Our service involves;
What is Kyphosis?
Kyphosis is the curve that describes the posture of your upper back. This curves range should not exceed 45 degrees (this is the angle created by the curve of the 1st and 12th thoracic vertebrae on a sagittal view). FCE Scan is the only company able to assess this curve without the need of radiation or magnetism.
Kyphosis angles can develop and increase over time. Quite simply a lot of our time is spent in positions where our arms are in front of us, this promotes rounding of the shoulders, an extension of the head and as a result the kyphotic curve increases. Think occupations involving desk work, hairdressing, manual or physical work and driving.
In females the posture can be further exaggerated following childbirth. Holding the baby in your arms for extended periods, bottle or breast feeding all lead to that positional posture where the head is flexed and the shoulders are rounded. To impact this even more in females is the hormone relaxin (it causes muscles, ligaments and joints to become lax) which can take up to 12 months after child birth to return to pre-pregnancy levels.
What else can an increased Kyphosis influence?
In essence if you flex the spine you compress the rib cage. The ribs attach from the spinal vertebrae and wrap around to attach to the sternum. In the case where the rib cage is compressed it can alter our respiratory systems efficiency. It impacts our breathing.
The diaphragm is a large dome shaped muscle at the base of the rib cage. It governs breathing and also the pressure balance between the abdominal and chest cavities. A kyphotic posture impacts this also, therefore it can impact the digestive system.
In impacting your breathing and digestive system a persons autonomic nervous system is too impacted. This can lead to issues such as anxiety or an imbalance in fight or flight responses. Sleep can pay a price.
Of course not everyone will be impacted in the same way by postural changes. While risks exist not all abnormal postures impact physical or mental health.
However, if you are not happy with your posture, if you notice postural changes and/or if you have noticed a correlation between these postural changes and your mood, breathing or digestive function over time then we are here to help you improve that.
